Honorary Style: Afro Style

 photo 33523-thumb_zpsmlnfnsuj.jpg

Hair has always had a major part to do with Black women's style. Black women spend a lot of time and effort on our hair. From buying and trying new products, to coloring, chopping and everything in between, our hair is very important to us. How we wear our hair has become just as important as what we wear on our body. Our hairstyles have become a way for us to express ourselves and have become fashion icons as well.

The afro is definitely the most iconic Black women's hair style to date. The afro is a natural hair style that represents us in our rawness and realness. The afro is timeless, classic, legendary and honorary. With weaves you can also achieve this look by adding hair extensions to your hair for easier maintenance.

The 70's is no longer the only time period in which the afro reigned. The natural hair revolution has made a great comeback. More and and more Black women of all ages are going natural and putting away the perm and straighteners. Natural hair used to be frowned upon especially in corporate settings but now Black women are reclaiming their hair and rocking it with dignity. The afro now represents power and beauty.

Honorary Style: Vintage Black Style

 photo a162d0347ca24cc6108dcbf0192724e0_small_zpsf2lchfok.jpg
We continue our series "Honorary Style", in order to celebrate Black history month. When looking back in time Black women have had captivating and classic style. Black women of the past worked their style and made it their own. Maybe this is why some of the best pieces can be found in your grandmother's closet! Vintage black style was simple yet certain items became signature style marks for the time periods in which these women lived in. We can always mark the 60's with the poodle skirt and the 19th century can be marked by huge elaborate long skirts with a very contoured structure.

The Black family is extremely important when looking back at vintage Black style. Not only did mom dress up on Sunday but so did dad, the kids and everyone else. Family photos were more planned and posed back then, than the family photos in which we take now. Sunday's has remained the fashion day for the African American family. Not only family but the Church was also an important influence to vintage Black style. Many households wore their best attire on Sunday. Huge church hats became the signature fashion statement in many southern Black churches and this trend still continues now.

Modesty was an essential element of vintage Black style. Long flowing skirts were worn in and out the house. These fashion trends still are prevalent in today's Black fashion. Vintage Black style serves as the inspiration for many fashion editorials and fashion trends that we see now. Classic gloves, pin curled hair, tucked in blouses are all trends reflecting vintage Black style that we still do now.

The legacy continues...

This month we are celebrating Black History month. We are celebrating iconic Women who have legendary style. The late Coretta Scott King is the opening lady for our series this month. Her style is not only iconic but it also passes the test of time. Even in her old age Coretta Scott King remained stylish.

Not only was Coretta Scott King the fuel that led a movement but her style was also impeccable while doing so. Mrs.King's look is very simple, feminine, modest, classy as well as timeless. Coretta wore very simple jewelry and accentuating head pieces in order to accent her classic tailored clothing. She had many dresses and skirts in her wardrobe that added a very feminine touch to her look. She wore detailed, classic, tailored looks that really spoke for the time period of the Civil Rights movement.

Every single photo where Mrs.King is pictured, she always looks like she is dressed to lead a movement. There is not a single photo of Mrs.King being underdressed, she was always dressed for the occasion. This woman completely revolutionized history and did so with style & grace. We would like to honor the late Coretta Scott King for all her labor in the Civil Rights movement and exemplary style. She definitely exemplifies the 21st century woman.

 photo couture22_zpscarwavlm.jpg

So one of the most challenging feats for ladies who wear skirts is finding the perfect skirt to wear during the winter. Yes we want to keep our skirts in the winter, but how do we do so without getting frozen? How can we wear skirts in the winter and still look oh so fabulous?

Of course the maxi skirt is one of our first go to options for a winter time skirt. Unfortunately some maxi skirts can be very thin and you can feel the freezing breeze blowing through your skirt. Purchasing a bunch of warm winter stockings is very necessary. You can wear the winter stockings under almost anything. They come in unique colors and patterns that can help to spice up your look. Stockings also allow you to not have to wear down to the floor skirts in the winter. All you have to do is pair that cute skirt with a nice warm pair of stockings to cover your legs and you are winter ready!

One of the most unique perfect skirts for the winter is a fur skirt. Until today I have never considered wearing a fur skirt. I do not believe I was even aware of their existence. Immediately upon discovering the fur skirt, I thought wait a minute why have I not thought of this all along? Not only will a fur skirt surely keep you warm in the winter but it will also get you noticed with its high fashion look.
