I do not think that anyone is as excited for Spring as I am! Over here at Why I Wear Skirts we want to be just as ready for Spring as we were for Winter and we want all our lovely readers to be ready as well. Spring time is time to bring out the brighter colors and luscious pastel tones. With all of these fashion decisions to make, finding the right hand candy is very important.

A nice way to spruce up the visuals of your eye candy is to find some nail polish in a color that is a nice contrasting color to your bag. The contrasting colors between the bag and your nail color is sure to be an eye catcher. We recommend trying bright colors that pop, try using a bright contrasting color on a bright contrasting color for super pop.

I highly recommend that you purchase a pastel tone bag as a homage to the spring time spirit of warm bright tones. Put away your dark winter bags and brighten up your closet in every area including your tote. You can find various types of bags from clutches to large totes in almost any pastel color. Spring Inspiration

Spring is just around the corner for all my warm weather loving fashionistas! It is time to bring out the bright clothing and put away the sweaters and stockings. A time to get bold by wearing color and bright prints. Floral print has always been the signature print for Spring time. The flowers start blooming all around us and our clothes tag along as well.

Thanks to Pinterest, I am discovering that there are so many innovative ways to use flowers. They are not just for clothing prints but can be incorporated into innovative lifestyle projects that can be used to spruce up your home décor and a plethora of other projects as well. Flowers can be used both in your home and apparel in exquisite ways. I have been so inspired just by the beauty of flowers in general and I admire their versatility.

Designers are not just using floral prints anymore but flowers have literally become 3D on your clothing. You can now touch your clothing and feel the flowers or even touch your hair to feel a similar effect. So get out of your comfort zone and get bold this Spring by wearing flowers, not just the print but literally.

Novis


Novis chose to use mostly soft pastel tones in their collection. Usually Autumn/Winter collections tend to shy away from pastels and lean towards rich fall tones such as oranges and olives. I absolutely love the way Novis chose to style their Fashion Week pieces. Wearing heels with socks adds a dash of funk to a classy look, I recommend that all our bold and daring fashionistas try this concept. Hats are also essential for this Autumn/Winter. Many Fashion Week designers incorporated various headpieces from hats to veils in their looks. It seems as if veils have worked their way into becoming the new hats?

Adam Lippes




By using simple and modern pieces with slightly abstract contouring, Adam Lippes created clean designs. The collection was a combination of colors from clean, white, brights to dark, black and rich colors. Rich floral prints invigorated the pieces. I absolutely love that you can mix and match almost any of the pieces from this collection and still have a high fashion, fresh off the runway look.

ICB's Autumn/Winter ready to wear collection was filled with bright colors as well as dark gray tones. Silks and knits were used as fabric for the clothing. These contrasting knits added depth to the physical feel of the collection. The knits were abstract in shape, creating unconventional sweaters that are sure to spice up your winter sweater collection. Almost once again sneaker heels prove to make a comeback!

Honorary Style: Afro Style

Hair has always had a major part to do with Black women's style. Black women spend a lot of time and effort on our hair. From buying and trying new products, to coloring, chopping and everything in between, our hair is very important to us. How we wear our hair has become just as important as what we wear on our body. Our hairstyles have become a way for us to express ourselves and have become fashion icons as well.




The afro is definitely the most iconic Black women's hair style to date. The afro is a natural hair style that represents us in our rawness and realness. The afro is timeless, classic, legendary and honorary. With weaves you can also achieve this look by adding hair extensions to your hair for easier maintenance.



The 70's is no longer the only time period in which the afro reigned. The natural hair revolution has made a great comeback. More and and more Black women of all ages are going natural and putting away the perm and straighteners. Natural hair used to be frowned upon especially in corporate settings but now Black women are reclaiming their hair and rocking it with dignity. The afro now represents power and beauty.

Honorary Style: Vintage Black Style

We continue our series "Honorary Style", in order to celebrate Black history month. When looking back in time Black women have had captivating and classic style. Black women of the past worked their style and made it their own. Maybe this is why some of the best pieces can be found in your grandmother's closet! Vintage black style was simple yet certain items became signature style marks for the time periods in which these women lived in. We can always mark the 60's with the poodle skirt and the 19th century can be marked by huge elaborate long skirts with a very contoured structure.

The Black family is extremely important when looking back at vintage Black style. Not only did mom dress up on Sunday but so did dad, the kids and everyone else. Family photos were more planned and posed back then, than the family photos in which we take now. Sunday's has remained the fashion day for the African American family. Not only family but the Church was also an important influence to vintage Black style. Many households wore their best attire on Sunday. Huge church hats became the signature fashion statement in many southern Black churches and this trend still continues now.

Modesty was an essential element of vintage Black style. Long flowing skirts were worn in and out the house. These fashion trends still are prevalent in today's Black fashion. Vintage Black style serves as the inspiration for many fashion editorials and fashion trends that we see now. Classic gloves, pin curled hair, tucked in blouses are all trends reflecting vintage Black style that we still do now.
