Black Dolls with Natural Hair?

What do most of your little girl's dolls look like?  Do you remember ever having a barbie doll with dark skin and kinky hair as a child?

Did your dolls look  like this?

Or, maybe you had black Barbies like this?

Of course, diversity is okay but there is a clear need for a balancing of images for little black girls in American culture.

I'm sure it's been said countless times by miriads of black women before me, but I was thinking about the self image of African American girls lately when it crossed my mind that our girls are in need of more positive role models and visuals that look like themselves; it is the lack of their own black image that causes many of them to struggle with a low self esteem, internally desiring to look like the typical barbie-doll images presented before them constantly.

But to my delight, today I was introduced to a collection of dolls made specifically with black girls in mind!  I thought this would be wonderful to show to mothers and women in general, especially as we are entering the holiday seasons.  What a wonderful way to show your daughter, niece, or friend's child how special and beautiful she is made with the unique characteristics of a black girl (such as her full, thick, beautiful hair).

These dolls show the diversity of a black girl's hair- from afros, kinky twists and braids to braid outs and beautiful up-dos these dolls will cause your girl to see herself as accepted, desired and unique!  She will be playing  with a doll that looks just like her and her black girlfriends, teaching her to embrace her self as GOD has made her...

Natural Girls United's Karen Byrd transforms these dolls into little black princesses with class and diversity.  And if you would like to buy one all you have to do is log onto her website, www.naturalgirlsunited.com to order a doll for your princess straight from her site.

Order quickly because from the looks of it, these dolls are being sold out really quickly due to the high demand and lack of supply for these types of dolls in the Black Community.

Here are a few more pictures of some of the types of dolls Karen has made:

I personally love this one because it encourages our girls to see themselves as a bride to the man of her dreams one day!  How many times have I looked on a google search for wedding gowns finding it hard to come across many pictures of curly-locked black women sporting gorgeous attire.

This is a positive image of a black girl you can share with a younger-you at such a tender age~

And then there's the afro doll here that will acclamate your daughter with seeing dolls with a full head of kinky hair instead of only being exposed to fair skinned models with long flowing blond hair.

Here she is:

So let's take a moment to celebrate the beauty of each and every one of our own unique looks this holiday season.

Let's celebrate our daughters and make them special, reminding them that they have been fearfully and wonderfully made until deep down in their own soul this is a reality they don't need anyone else to affirm.

Hat's off to Karen Byrd for her amazing advancements in this much needed area.

One of my favorite characteristics of these dolls is that they come in all different body types, skin complexions and hair types!

What do you like about these dolls and think about Karen's advancements?

  1. What are your thoughts about the effect having white dolls only can have on our little black girls?

  2. I used to play with Barbies all the time as a child. Out of the approximately 16 that I owned there were only 3 African-American ones. None of them however looked like me. Natural hair dolls are a great idea and gives a more rounded view of what is beautiful. I'm particularly partial to the Afro doll since I love big hair lol
